Egnos Benefits

EGNOS provides benefits across the terrestrial domain.

Rail Transport

EGNOS is foreseen to be a navigation solution for the upcoming ETCS/ERTMS (European Train Control System / European Rail Traffic Management System) environment. The ETCS/ERTMS is under implementation in many countries. EGNOS will provide performances capable of supporting train location determination, without the need for dense trackside infrastructure. EGNOS clearly shows value when used for low density lines such as in Eastern Europe where balises are missing, and in areas where EGNOS could be broadcast at a later stage, such as Africa. EGNOS target market segments include: fleet management, traffic management for low density lines, signaling...

Road Transport

In the road domain, the accuracy and integrity criteria of EGNOS are crucial to establish specific navigation applications. EGNOS is one of the keys to managing road transport in Europe, for regulatory bodies as well as for commercial service providers, as the system is capable of meeting meter-level accuracy consistently over Europe. Fleet management, public safety and emergency (eg. police, fire, medical), road tolling, telematics, leisure activities are amongst the applications that should benefit from the performances offered by EGNOS.

Intermodal Freight Transport

EGNOS can be used for dangerous and valuable goods tracking across different modes of transport, such as road, rail and maritime transport. Containers may be tracked with high accuracy and continuity during their entire journey with the same system, as EGNOS coverage area encompasses the whole of Europe.

Other markets

The European E112 initiative, which aims at the implementation of a European-wide emergency call number 112, may reinforce the uptake of EGNOS-based emergency positioning services. Many other applications can use EGNOS where accuracy and integrity are of prime concern: precision farming, Location Based Services, Search & Rescue services, etc.
