EGNOS has been initially designed based on aviation requirements. However, as EGNOS is seen as a multimodal satellite navigation enabler, many terrestrial applications requirements can be met by the EGNOS performances. In the process, some of these requirements are being currently reviewed. The requirements are based on the four criteria: accuracy, integrity, continuity and availability.
In the road and the rail domain, the integrity issue is important for the safety and liability critical related applications. The road applications requiring integrity are those such as advanced driver assistance, emergency services, car theft recovery, speed limit enforcement, on street parking pricing, road user charging, - while in the road domain the integrity issue is of importance for the requirements of low density lines, signalling, train control.
The assessment of these requirements in light of the performances of EGNOS will determine the market uptake.
The non safety of life and non liability critical applications have less stringent requirements, such as for navigation services, fleet and traffic management, traffic/passenger information.
