ESSP and TRIWO Strengthen Ties: EGNOS Working Agreement for Zweibrücken Airport

ESSP SAS is delighted to announce a new EGNOS Working Agreement (EWA) with TRIWO, operator of Zweibrücken Airport (ICAO: EDRZ). This collaboration paves the way for the deployment of EGNOS-based procedures at the airport, reinforcing safety and efficiency in its operations.

Zweibrücken Airport is located just about 4 km southeast of the city, and TRIWO provides the Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) at the aerodrome, as the responsible Air Traffic Services (ATS) provider. The airfield features a 2,675-metre asphalt runway (03/21) and is accessible under a PPR (Prior Permission Required) regime for both visual and instrument approaches. TRIWO operates a 24-hour service and also provides complementary infrastructure — including a vehicle test centre, a fire-training ground, and a conference facility — which underlines the versatile role of the aerodrome in both aviation and regional business.

Through the EWA, Zweibrücken Airport will benefit from a structured framework to adopt EGNOS-based procedures, like LPV approaches. These procedures deliver increased navigation performance, especially in challenging weather, and support operational resilience — helping operators to conduct safer and more reliable flights.

This agreement also highlights the strategic importance of EGNOS in Europe. As a key element of the European Union’s Space Programme, EGNOS — managed by EUSPA — enhances GPS signals to ensure high integrity and accuracy, supporting critical aviation phases such as instrument approaches. By fostering its use, this partnership contributes to the broader ambitions of the Single European Sky (SES): optimizing airspace, reducing dependency on ground-based navigation aids, and raising the efficiency of air transport.

Furthermore, EGNOS continues evolving. Planned upgrades will reinforce system resilience and prepare the service for future GNSS generations and SBAS-based operations— a testament to the European Commission’s long-term commitment to a more integrated and technologically advanced European airspace.

With this new EWA, ESSP reaffirms its dedication to collaborating with stakeholders like TRIWO, enabling the adoption of cutting-edge navigation procedures and boosting safety, flexibility, and performance at regional airports.
