EGNOS has reached an impressive milestone with 1,000 approach procedures now utilising its Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS). This achievement highlights EGNOS's vital role in transforming aviation safety, accessibility, and sustainability across Europe.

In January 2023, the Lahti-Vesivehmaa Aerodrome (ICAO code: EFLA), located in southern Finland, two hours to the north of Helsinki, published the first LPV procedure to a Non-Instrument Runway End (NIRE) in Class G (uncontrolled) airspace in Europe; thus, becoming pioneers on the matter and paving the way for many other procedures to come.

That is what Charlotte Neyret, ESSP (European Satellite Services Provider) CEO said, as the PBN implementing rule envisages a full PBN environment by that time. In fact from June 2030, all phases of flight should be based on PBN implementations, being conventional navigation restricted to a backup role (with the exception of CAT II, CAT IIIA or CAT IIIB operations). This significantly remarks the role and importance of EGNOS as a key enabler of PBN.

Small EU aerodromes and airfields used for recreational aviation can rely on EGNOS to become safer and more accessible. EUSPA, EASA, and the aviation industry joint effort yielded a second publication offering Safety Assessment Guidelines to General Aviation operators.

The European GNSS programs EGNOS and Galileo attended the call of the annual ATM congress (WATM) in this first in-person edition in two years, and assisted with the latest news on satellite navigation referring to aviation, urban mobility and search and rescue (SARS). The EU Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA), former GSA, as the company designated to manage the three systems that make up the European Space Program; EGNOS, Galileo and Copernicus presented their essential role in the development of the drone sector in Europe and the Urban Air Mobility of the future.

The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) Safety of Life (SoL) Service is celebrating its 10th Anniversary. Since it was declared operational in March 2011, the EGNOS SoL Service has been supporting civil aviation operations down to LPV (Localiser Performance with Vertical guidance) minima at airports across Europe.
